This One Nutrient Prevents Breast Cancer, Study Confirms
Although research on breast cancer cure has taken several decades so far, it still hasn’t provided positive results. One study has found that anti-cancer medications based on curcuma can help in the treatment of breast cancer as they destroy cancer cells in the breast. The study, conducted by several specialists in this field including Ramesh C Gupta, Ph.D. from the University of Louisville, found that curcuma can considerably reduce tumor size.
Another study conducted by Washington State University scientists at Texas A&M has found that antioxidant compounds in peaches can prevent breast cancer cell growth and development. The study results showed that regular consumption of at least 3 peaches a day can significantly speed up recovery in breast cancer patients.
According to the researchers, these compounds can cut down the risk of metastasis, the primary killer in breast and many other cancers, when added to anti-cancer therapies. In laboratory tests, these powerful antioxidants have proved effective in destroying breast cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells intact. During the study, lab mice were given extracts from “Rich Lady” peaches, which killed even the most aggressive breast cancer cells.
In the study results, published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, the researchers explain that certain phenols in the fruit account for the amazing cancer-fighting properties of peaches. They also added that the extracts given to mice were five times more toxic on cancer cells as opposed to normal cells. Follow-up tests also confirmed that the compounds prevented cancer from growing in animals.
Unfortunately, breast cancer is constantly on the rise, and only last year 232,000 new breast cancer cases were registered in the US alone. It’s also been estimated that this life-threatening cancer is predominant in Western countries.
The fact that these natural phenolic compounds have shown great efficacy in reduction and prevention of breast cancer tumors is very promising for new and more effective treatment of this disease, especially because the chemotherapy agents that are currently used are very toxic and attack healthy cells along with cancerous ones.
As the trial only included lab animals, further research is needed to confirm these findings, in which case, peach extracts may really become a promising alternative for breast cancer treatment.
