10 Signs You Have Candida Overgrowth (and What to Do About It)

10 Signs You Have Candida Overgrowth
You are probably questioning what actually Candida is? It is a fungus, a form of yeast, a small amount can live in your mouth and intestines. Candida’s job is to help with digestion and nutrient absorption, but if you have to much of this bacteria in your organism, it breaks down the wall of the intestine and penetrates the bloodstream, it can cause leaky gut because it releases toxic byproducts into the body. It can cause many health problems including digestive problems and depression.

How do you get Candida overgrowth?
Candida levels are kept in check by the health bacteria in your gut. But the number can rise if you consume antibiotics which kill the good acteria, or you have a diet which contain too much refined carbohydrates and sugar, consuming high amounts of alcohol, taking contraceptives or many other factors such as a high-stress lifestyle. Candida overgrowth can be caused even by a diet high in beneficial fermented foods like Kombucha, sauerkraut and pickles.

How do you test for Candida overgrowth?

Blood Test
You should check IgG, IgA and IgM Candida Anti-bodies, you can do this through most any lab. Overgrowth of Candida is present if there are high levels of these antibodies. They can be sometimes negative even if the stool or urine test is positive.

Stool Testing
It is the most accurate test for me personally. Candida will be checked in this way in your colon and lower intestines. But the most preferable test is the comprehensive stool test, not the standard one. With the stool test, levels of yeast will be directly analyzed. The species of yeast will be determined, and the effective treatment will be found by the lab.

Urine Organix Dysbiosis Test
By this test D-Arabinitol will be detected, which is a waste product of Candida yeast overgrowth. If an overgrowth of Candida is present, there will be an elevated test. The test will find out if the Candida is in your upper gut or in the small intestines.

How do you treat Candida overgrowth?
If you effectively treat Candida it means that you stop the yeast overgrowth, restore the good bacteria which keep them in check, and also heal the gut so that Candida cannot enter the bloodstream again.

If you want to achieve this, first that you should do is to practice a diet with low levels of carbohydrates. You must also eliminate all kings of sugar, which feed the yeast, such as candy, desserts, alcohol and flours. Candida will be prevented or even dead, if you reduce your diet to only a dew cups a day of the more complex carbohydrated such as grains, beans, fruit, bread, pasta and potatoes. All fermented foods should be eliminated as well.

It will take 3 to 6 months to back the Candida under control if you are using only this diet. For this reason , I personnaly use an anti-fungal treatment such as Diflucan or Nyastatin for a month or longer. You can take a supplement of caprylic acid if you are self-treating. This acid comes from coconut oil and destroys Candida in a way it “pokes holes” in the yeast wall and cause it to die. Some people also recommend the use of oil from oregano. It can be very effective, but it also kills good bacteria so I don’t recommend it. Good bacteria will not be harmed by the use of anti-fungal medications and caprylic acid.

You should take probiotics on a regular basis, because you must restore the healthy bacteria which keeps your Candida population under control. The Candida levels will be reduced, and good bacteria restored if you take 25-100 billion units of probiotics. Candida will be preventing from working its way through your body if you heal your gut. You may do that by eliminating inflammatory foods which harm your GI tract and also start feeding yourself with foods that aid in digestion and nutrient absorption. In this way your overall health will be improved.
