What Will Happen If We Stop Sleeping?

Sleep is a very important part of life. Everyone knows the unpleasant feeling when you simply cannot get enough sleep.

Do you know what will happen if we fully stop sleeping?

ASAP Science gives answer to this question:

Science knows too little about sleep and the creation of the dreaming process in evolution. Lying helpless while predators crawl all around you do not seem very practical.

There are several clear dependencies scientists discovered about sleep. Adults who sleep between 6 and 8 hours a night live longer. Too much sleep can have a negative impact on your health and leads to heart disease and diabetes. On the other hand, chronic sleeplessness is associated with cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, and even brain damage.

What will happen if you stop sleeping from this moment on?

After the first sleepless night the mesolimbic system is stimulate and the amount dopamine in the brain sharply increases. It could lead to higher motivation, energy and positive mood and even increased desire for sex. Although it sounds appealing, you are walking the slippery slope: the brain gradually excludes areas responsible for planning and evaluation of decisions leading to impulsive behavior.

Once exhaustion caught up with you, you will have a sense of slower reactions, weakened perceptions and cognitive functions. After two days without sleep, the body loses the ability to properly process the glucose. Also, the immune system stops its work.

In some cases, three days without sleep lead to hallucinations.

Research shows that physical appearance looks less healthy and less attractive.

The longest period of documented scientific insomnia is 264 hours – or 11 days. Participants in the experiment developed problems with concentration, irritability and perceptions. Surprisingly, the long wakefulness did not influence long-term health.

People who were subjected to experiment similar in the medical conditions did not experience any neurological, physiological, medical or psychiatric problems. However, the sleeplessness is researched with a limited number of research and it work does not mean it cannot cause permanent damage.

Experiments with sleep deprivation, which were conducted on rats, are usually leading to death after 2 weeks. But scientists are not sure whether the animals die from lack of sleep or stress caused by constant awakening.
